-- New research strengthens the idea that green spaces boost longevity
News to spike the price of real estate close to city parks – living handy to green spaces could help you live longer.
Crunching data from nine longitudinal studies involving 8 million people across the U.S., Canada, China, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Australia, researchers analysed the availability of green space (from satellite images) and premature death due to all causes.
They discovered that for every 0.1 increase on a ‘vegetation’ score there was a corresponding 4% reduction in premature death.
Why green is good
Urban green spaces, such as parks, sports fields, and gardens offer space for physical activity, relaxation, peace, and an escape.
Multiple studies also show that green spaces reduce stress and boost mental and physical health. They’re also associated with better air quality, reduced traffic noise, and cooler temperatures.
Researchers will use the findings to estimate how many premature deaths in cities around the world could be prevented with more green spaces.
